Abstract
Le premier tome du Traité sur les apparitions des esprits et sur les vampires ou les revenans de Hongrie, de Moravie, etc. (1751) de Dom Augustin Calmet porte sur la démonologie. Dans ce traité sont approfondis plusieurs éléments de démonologie publiés dans ses analyses et dissertations bibliques. Cet article présente les thèmes les plus importants : le pouvoir des mauvais anges, l’exorcisme, le sabbat des sorcières et la permission de Dieu. Sur chacun de ces thèmes, nous comparons comment Dom Calmet se situe par rapport à ses principales sources démonologiques. Cet érudit des grands traités démonologiques défend l’existence du Diable, tout en réfutant plusieurs croyances présentées dans ces traités. Nous soutenons que, dans ce XVIIIe siècle caractérisé par la perte de l’hégémonie des démonologues, Dom Calmet cherche une voie raisonnable entre la tradition démonologique, la crédulité populaire et la nouvelle critique des Lumières.
