RECOVERING FROM OBLIVION: REASSESSING THE NEGLECTED POTENTIAL OF UKRAINIAN THEATRE STUDIES

Abstract
This article provides an analysis of the theater-critical legacy of Arkadiy Matviyovych Drak, a prominent theater researcher of the second half of the 20th century. The focus is placed on the reintegration of Drak’s name and literary-critical heritage into modern scientific discourse, given the practical marginalization of his visionary contributions in recent decades. Out of the exceptionally broad range of topics addressed by the scholar, two specific areas are examined: the history of national stage design, represented by the essay “The Unique World of the Stage Artist” dedicated to Anatol Petritsky, and the review of the production based on the works of Mykola Khvylovy, titled “Who Are They? Where Are They Being Driven?,” which showcases Drak’s analytical and critical approach. The research methodology is based on a historical-biographical approach and a systematic analysis of archival materials, while also incorporating Drak’s significant role within the museum field as the deputy director of the Museum of Theater, Music, and Cinema of Ukraine. These materials were originally published in the journal “Ukrainian Theater” during the last quarter of the 20th century. Revisiting them at the current stage allows for a deeper and more comprehensive assessment of specific phenomena within national theatrical culture as well as the professional profile of Arkadiy Drak, whose expertise in scenography was rooted in the creative traditions of his family. The scientific novelty lies in the reassessment of Drak’s professional legacy as a bridge between the historical avant-garde and the contemporary theatrical process. The art historical contribution under study encompasses the interpretation of many aspects of theatrical culture, such as the history of Ukrainian theater, dramaturgy, acting, and stage design. It is established that Drak’s courageous civic position, particularly regarding the evaluation of previously suppressed figures like Khvylovy, remains a vital asset for modern art history and the intellectual development of future generations.
