Abstract
Post-Reconstruction Jacksonville was one of the most equitable cities in the South, with white Republicans giving African Americans the space for their middle class to flourish. Minority lawyers developed their practices and took on the early civil rights cases during the Jim Crow era. Among them was the battle over streetcar segregation, with lawyer J. Douglas Wetmore leading the sole defeat of segregated cars in the South. His protégé, Simuel D. McGill, marked his own civil rights victories and took on the <italic>Chambers</italic> case, which he litigated for nine years. The early African American bar paved the way for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund that arose with the next generation.
