Abstract
The steady and successful appeals by Simuel D. McGill for the Pompano Boys led to a backlash among the white citizens of Broward County, who were incensed that the migrant workers were not executed. Whites’ anger led to the retributive 1935 lynching of an African American laborer in Fort Lauderdale. Members of the sheriff’s office were said to be part of the lynching party. The chapter argues that such reprisal tactics were frequent in the South, as an expression of outrage by white citizens who took over from the formal justice system and who sought to ensure that the racial hierarchy would stay in place.
