Abstract
In the Syrian border crisis of 2018, the principles intended to guarantee humanitarian integrity precluded actually delivering humanitarian relief. By contrast, the interlocutors of this book insist that God is the one who gives relief. Their invocation defamiliarizes the primal scene of humanitarianism and unsettles its political reason. This introduction surveys conceptual questions prompted by the unprecedented work of Muslim charitable organizations in Jordan and Canada. It also develops the distinctive method of the book: based on fieldwork with refugees, relief workers and religious scholars, this ethnography of religious imaginings and theological argumentation demonstrates what is at stake in migration and refuge outside secular frames of conception. It seeks to understand the devastation of the Syrian war through the Islamic tradition.
