У статті розглянуто біологічні та поведінкові особливості рятувально-пошукових собак, які відіграють важливу роль у виявленні постраждалих під завалами природного або техногенного походження. Зростання значення цих тварин у рятувальних операціях зумовлене їхньою здатністю до швидкого й ефективного пошуку, що значно перевищує можливості професійних рятувальників: одна тренована собака здатна обстежити площу, яку зазвичай досліджують 20–30 осіб. Метою оглядової роботи є аналіз біологічних механізмів, що забезпечують високу ефективність пошукової діяльності собак, а також характеристика поведінкових якостей, які формуються в процесі спеціалізованої підготовки. Основною біологічною перевагою собак є надзвичайно розвинений нюховий епітелій (до 300 мільйонів рецепторів), що в сотні разів перевищує аналогічні показники людини. Завдяки цьому собаки здатні виявляти запах живої людини навіть у складних умовах: крізь товщу снігу (до 5 м), ґрунту чи бетону. Собаки здатні розрізняти індивідуальний запах людини, який формується на основі генетичних особливостей, зокрема комплексу головної гістосумісності (MHC). Водночас на характер запаху тіла людини можуть впливати зовнішні чинники – харчування, стан шкіри, мікробіом, використання косметичних засобів, тоді як базовий запах залишається стабільним. Високий рівень сенсорної чутливості пошукових собак корелюється із психологічною стійкістю, мотивацією до пошуку та здатністю до тісної співпраці з кінологом. Ефективність роботи собаки на завалі залежить не лише від її нюхових здібностей, а й від специфічного набору поведінкових та психофізіологічних характеристик, які формуються під час тренувань. Популярними породами для рятувально-пошукової діяльності є німецька вівчарка, бельгійський малінуа та лабрадор. Особлива увага приділяється значенню «золотої години» – критичного періоду для порятунку життя, коли швидкість і точність виявлення постраждалих мають вирішальне значення. Успішне застосування собак у таких умовах базується на поєднанні біологічних, поведінкових і тактико-оперативних чинників.
