Abstract
“occupied mirrors” for toy piano and audience, was written in 2019 and it is dedicated to Antonietta Loffredo, who commissioned it. The starting point for “occupied mirrors”, was a picture that I took in Montreal, Canada, in which you can see in a window the reflection of the street. Moreover, when I got closer to the window I couldn’t see the interior of the house, but just the reflection of street, as if the street became the interior of the house. This lead me to think on how objects and situations are constantly being occupied, in this case, the stage, and that the performance of that stage was being occupied by other elements, in this case the audience. The idea of the piece is that while the pianist plays the piece, the audience becomes part of that performance. The audience’s role is to actively participate in the music. They echo, mimic, amplify and transform the musical material that is played by the pianist. In this piece the audience is one of the performers of the piece, and therefore is another element of the musical plot.
