Frequency-Reconfigurable Yagi-Uda Antenna Based on Vanadium Dioxide

Abstract
A frequency-reconfigurable Yagi antenna based on vanadium dioxide (VO<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</inf>) phase-change material is investigated in this paper. Utilizing the characteristics of insulating and metallic phase transition of VO<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</inf> material, the designed antenna achieves dynamic switching features at the operating frequency between the X-band ($8-12 \mathrm{GHz}$) and the Ku-band ($12-18 \mathrm{GHz}$). Simulation results demonstrate that the antenna exhibits good impedance matching, radiation directivity, and gain performance in both states of the $\mathbf{V O}_{\mathbf{2}}$ material. Compared to traditional PIN diode solutions, VO<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</inf> material offers lower RF loss, not only a simpler configuration and superior thermal stability, but easier integration and miniaturization, making it suitable for future communication and radar systems.
