Abstract
Owens is moved to running back as a junior and the season looks promising. Before Auburn's second game, against Tennessee, offensive coordinator Gene Lorendo uses the N-word to describe a Vols player during a team meeting reviewing film. Owens is frozen. Everyone is looking at him, to see what he will do. He says nothing. Later in the week, in the fourth quarter at Knoxville, with Auburn at the Tennessee goal line and about to take the lead, Owens fumbles into the end zone, and the Vols recover. Auburn comes back to win but the fumble will not be forgotten. The next week against Kentucky Owens scores a touchdown and is Auburn's leading rusher. Yet, he gets only five more carries the final seven games of the 1971 season.
