Abstract
RÉSUMÉ La plupart des médicaments sont développés et fabriqués en fonction des besoins des adultes. Lorsqu’aucune formulation pharmacologique sur le marché ne répond aux besoins de l’enfant, il faut manipuler un médicament pour adulte afin d’en faciliter une administration sécuritaire et appropriée. Ce processus, qu’on appelle préparation magistrale, est pratique courante en pédiatrie. Les prescripteurs qui s’occupent d’enfants doivent être informés du recours aux préparations magistrales et des risques intrinsèques qui s’y associent. Parallèlement, il est urgent que Santé Canada, les organismes d’évaluation des technologies de la santé, les gestionnaires de listes provinciales et territoriales de médicaments admissibles et les fabricants de produits pharmaceutiques collaborent pour répondre aux enjeux complexes qui compromettent l’accès aux formulations commerciales adaptées aux enfants au Canada.
