Abstract
RESUME Gambetta et Ferry ont joué tous deux un rôle décisif dans la fondation de la IIIe République. L’examen de leurs correspondances permet de suivre l’évolution subtile de leur relation personnelle. Dans leur combat commun, le Lorrain réservé a subi l’ascendant du Méridional éloquent et il s’est vite tissé entre eux une chaleureuse amitié. Peu à peu, celle-ci s’est distendue et, après la conquête du pouvoir par les républicains, les ambitions se sont durement affrontées. Aujourd’hui, Ferry, loué pour son œuvre scolaire, désavoué pour son œuvre coloniale, demeure plus présent que son ami et rival dans la mémoire collective des Français.
