Effectiveness of Herbal Poultice for Knee Pain Relief in Patients with Osteoarthritis of Knee

Abstract
Introduction: Arthritis is one of the most common chronic health conditions and a major cause of morbidity and disability in aging society. In the past five years, the average age over 50 years had been increased. This research aimed to study the effective of herbal poultice for knee pain relief in patients with osteoarthritis of knee Method: The research design was a quasi-experimental with a one group pretest-posttest design implemented in the knee OA patients. The experimental group were 36 participants. The herbal poultice was pasted on both knees for 15 minutes. The activity was done for 3 times adjoining. Data were collected by “Western Ontario and McMaster University, WOMAC”and interview schedule were analyzed by analytical statistics, paired t-test for comparing mean within group. Result: Knee OA patients in the post experimental group had significantly decreased knee pain, joint stiffness time, time to walk and improved knee function comparing with pre experimental group (p < 0.001). Discussion and Conclusion: The herbal poultice relieved knee pain, joint stiffness, time to walk and thus the herbal poultice might be alternative treatment. บทคัดย่อ บทนำ: โรคข้อเข่าเสื่อมเป็นปัญหาเรื้อรังและเป็นสาเหตุของความผิดปกติทางร่างกายและ ความพิการในกลุ่มผู้สูงอายุในคลินิกแพทย์แผนไทยประยุกต์มหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์ พบว่า ผู้ป่วยโรคข้อเข่าเสื่อมที่มีอายุ ๕๐ ปีขึ้นไป มีแนวโน้มสูงขึ้นอย่างเห็นได้ชัดในช่วง ๕ ปีที่ผ่านมา วิจัยนี้ศึกษาประสิทธิผลของยาพอกสมุนไพรเพื่อบรรเทาอาการปวดเข่า ในผู้ป่วยโรคข้อเข่าเสื่อม วิธีการศึกษา: การศึกษาครั้งนี้เป็นการวิจัยกึ่งทดลอง ชนิดกลุ่มเดียววัดก่อนและหลังการทดลองศึกษาในผู้ป่วยโรคข้อเข่าเสื่อม ณ คลินิกแพทย์แผนไทยประยุกต์ จำนวน ๓๖ รายโดยการพอกสมุนไพรบริเวณเข่าทั้ง ๒ ข้างเป็นเวลา ๑๕ นาที จำนวน ๓ ครั้ง ติดต่อกัน รวบรวมข้อมูลด้วยแบบทดสอบ WOMAC และวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลด้วยสถิติร้อยละค่าเฉลี่ย Paired T-Test ผลการศึกษา: ภายหลังการทดลองพบว่า ระดับความปวดของข้อเข่า ระดับอาการข้อฝืด และช่วงเวลาในการลุกเดินลดลงกว่าก่อนการทดลอง และระดับความสามารถในการใช้งานของข้อเข่าดีขึ้นกว่าก่อนการทดลองอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ (p<๐.๐๐๑) วิจารณ์ และสรุปผลการศึกษา: ยาพอกสมุนไพรสามารถลดความปวด ความฝืด และช่วงเวลาในการลุกเดินได้ และส่งผลให้ความสามารถในการใช้งานดีขึ้น ซึ่งยาพอกสมุนไพรเป็นทางเลือกหนึ่งใน การรักษาได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ
