Currently, Canada is grappling with a severe shortage of healthcare professionals, a crisis that was exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic. The relentless demands of combating the virus have left healthcare workers overwhelmed and experiencing high levels of stress and burnout. To address this pressing issue, there is a critical need for an effective solution capable of remotely monitoring the vital signs of patients requiring continuous care. Such a solution must be inclusive, transcending gender, ethnicity, and skin color barriers. This thesis project focuses on the development of a non-invasive AI system designed to monitor an individual's respiratory rate from a distance. This paper delves into the motivation behind the project, outlines the methodology employed, anticipates the outcomes, and provides insights into the current progress of the ongoing work.
