Abstract
Vancouver, British Columbia has been ranked the most expensive city for housing in North America. The mismatch between housing supply in demand, caused by an influx of residents and a legal regime preventing rapid construction of new housing to meet this demand, has been a primary contributor to the housing shortage. To address this crisis and develop their own economic and social power in their traditional homeland area, the First Nations communities of the Musqeuam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh formed MST Development to coordinate real estate development on newly acquired tribally owned parcels. This research paper will explore the context of the housing shortage, the history and activity of MST Development, and how these housing and real estate projects have affected the Coast Salish First Nations in the Vancouver metropolitan area.
