Abstract
De komst van een nieuwe Universiteitsbibliotheek in Amsterdam is een feit. Na jaren van discussie en bezwaarprocedures werd in september 2019 de eerste paal geslagen. Na de opening van deze UB op het Universiteitskwartier, naar verwachting in 2023, zullen de bibliotheek P.C. Hoofthuis en de oude UB op het Singel hun deuren sluiten. Het Universiteitskwartier zal dienstdoen als een van de vier campussen van de Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA).<br/>Het Universiteitskwartier moet met de nieuwe UB, met kennisinstituut en museum het Allard Pierson en met de Faculteit der Geesteswetenschappen en de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen (KNAW) fungeren als dé plek van kennis en cultuur. Het is ook de plaats waar de UvA – als Athenaeum Illustre – in 1632 begon.<br/>Het ontwerp en de inrichting van de UB zijn afgestemd op de behoeftes van studenten, onderzoekers, docenten en medewerkers. Zo komen er veel verschillende studieplekken en werk- en onderwijsruimtes in het gebouw. De nieuwe UB wil een ontmoetingsplek worden voor studeren, onderzoeken en werken. Ze moet daarmee fungeren als een belangrijke spil binnen de UvA. Met het ontwerp van het gebouw – het atrium waar evenementen en tentoonstellingen mogelijk zijn – en de unieke plek in de binnenstad wil de UB bovendien een brug slaan tussen universiteit en samenleving.
