Abstract
Parmi les encéphalopathies spongiformes transmissibles, le syndrome du dépérissement chronique des cervidés (CWD) est une maladie neurodégénérative fatale présente dans les populations sauvages et d’élevage. Observée pour la première fois dans les années 1960 chez un cerf mulet captif d’Amérique du Nord, la CWD a été plus tard détectée chez les cervidés sauvages et captifs de plusieurs États américains et provinces canadiennes. La CWD se transmet par contact direct ou via l’environnement où l’agent infectieux persiste pendant des années. En l’absence d’un traitement ou vaccin, le seul moyen disponible pour contrôler la maladie dans les populations sauvages est la mise en place de quotas de chasse orientée sur les mâles, qui sont les individus les plus touchés.
