Ce mémoire explore la trajectoire de deux oeuvres d’Otto Dix dans les collections canadiennes. Il se concentre sur Portrait de l’avocat Hugo Simons au Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, et sur Portrait du Dr Heinrich Stadelmann à l’Art Gallery of Ontario. Il analyse comment l’histoire et la provenance de ces oeuvres ont influencé leur présentation et leur réception, tout en examinant les liens entre les propriétaires, les institutions, les acteurs du monde de l’art et les contextes historiques. Le mémoire met en lumière l’importance de la recherche archivistique pour reconstruire ces histoires et les réseaux d’acteurs impliqués dans le commerce de l’art pendant et après la Deuxième Guerre mondiale. Il aborde également l’émergence de la recherche de provenance et des initiatives législatives visant à faciliter le rapatriement et la restitution des oeuvres spoliées.
