This paper presents the simulation and experiments performed on a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) electrostatic field sensor with a virtual ground. Virtual ground is usually used when the sensor is powered by battery, which allows sensor to be used in handheld scenario. Simulations and experiments with the sensor suspended on a wooden pole and with a power line source close to the ground plane are investigated. Cases studies are for distances between the sensor and the power line being $250 \mathrm{~mm}, 500 \mathrm{~mm}, 750 \mathrm{~mm}$ and 1000 mm, and results show the simulation and experiments are in close agreement.
