Tout occupé à signifier le mystère essentiel et l’opacité du réel, le roman, chez Jules Barbey d’Aurevilly comme chez Marcel Proust, est le lieu indécis d’une confrontation entre la poésie et le récit. Ainsi, quand la prose romanesque de Barbey prétend porter le deuil du poème perdu, la Recherche orchestre avec bonheur, au contraire, une unité retrouvée. Chez Proust, roman et recueil se confondent, prose et poésie se rejoignent et la question métaphysique trouve une réponse esthétique. Aux fondrières (en fait de fondations) sur lesquelles le « barbare à sensations » qu’est Barbey a bâti l’édifice jésuitique d’une œuvre dont le catholicisme a souvent éveillé le soupçon, peut alors succéder la « cathédrale » immense élevée à la gloire de la littérature par le « dilettante d’architecture » qui fonde notre modernité.
