Abstract
En mai 1939, le mécène Robert Zunz commande à Max Jacob deux albums importantscomposés de gouaches, de dessins et de poèmes. L’artiste a entretenu une correspondanced’affaire avec son client qui évolue rapidement. La déclaration de guerre, l’exode, l’Occupation, l’arrestation de Zunz le 12 décembre 1941, son incarcération au camp de Compiègnevont bouleverser la situation. Le destin croisé de deux hommes permet de saisir le portrait dedeux Juifs français convertis que les persécutions vont plonger, malgré le réconfort et le salutde la Foi, dans l’effondrement. L’article est truffé de nombreux extraits de la correspondanceet présente par ailleurs un choix de lettres significatif.
