Abstract
Historians regard Christopher Columbus’s four voyages of discovery as a world-changing event. When he made landfall in the Bahamas on October 12, 1492, he opened permanent contact between Eurasia and Africa on the one hand and the Americas on the other. Other Europeans from other cultures (such as the Vikings, who settled briefly in Newfoundland around the year 1000) came to the Americas before him, but he was the first to create a permanent link between the two hemispheres.
