Abstract

-- ABSTRACT : This master's thesis examines the competencies sought in job postings within Quebec's engineering sector. The study was conducted in a context marked by a persistent shortage of skilled labor, an aging workforce, and rapid transformations in the labor market driven by technological advancement. The primary objective is to identify and categorize the required competencies, organized into three dimensions: knowledge (technical expertise), know-how (practical and operational skills), and interpersonal skills (personal and behavioral attributes). A qualitative approach was employed, based on a content analysis of 102 job postings published between December 2024 and February 2025 across various recruitment platforms. The data were manually coded using a structured analytical grid, allowing for the identification of the most frequently recurring employer expectations. The findings reveal that behavioral competencies hold a central place in selection criteria, reflecting a growing emphasis on relational abilities within the engineering profession. In terms of knowledge, employers consistently require a university degree in engineering, registration with the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec, and proficiency in specialized digital tools. Regarding know-how, competencies related to planning, project management, and problem-solving emerge as common expectations. In conclusion, the desired profile reflects a hybrid model of engineer: a technically proficient, operationally autonomous professional with the interpersonal capacity to navigate complex work environments. The study underscores a potential gap between the competencies fostered in academic training and those articulated by employers, highlighting the need for stronger alignment between engineering education and labor market demands. -- Mot(s) clé(s) en anglais : Professional competencies; skills; practical skills; interpersonal skills; Recruitment; Engineering; job postings; Competency profile; labor market.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
