Dans cet extrait tiré de Unsettled (minor compositions, 2025), Erin Manning examine la manière dont les bases de données généalogiques au Québec ont ouvert la possibilité pour un nouveau genre d’occupation blanche : la pratique des « Prétendien·nes », des colons qui revendiquent une identité « métisse » basée sur des ancêtres autochtones remontant à la dixième génération (à des fins d’évasion fiscale et de droits de chasse) tout en conservant leurs privilèges coloniaux. Suivant les études autochtones de la généalogie de Kim TallBear et Darryl Leroux, Manning soutient ainsi que les revendications identitaires basées sur le quantum sanguin constituent une recolonisation plutôt qu’une décolonisation. À partir de ce débat qui agite les politiques canadiennes contemporaines, Manning analyse la blanchité comme une pratique systémique d’« établissement » qui stabilise la propriété coloniale. Elle critique comment les pratiques d’Équité, Diversité et Inclusion renforcent l’individualisme, et propose un « désétablissement » par ce qu’elle nomme la fabulation – des pratiques relationnelles qui refusent les logiques de propriété.
