Abstract
ABSTRACT: Achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 requires a major reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in all sectors, including buildings. Since the electricity grid in Québec is more than 99 % low-carbon, electrifying buildings is a key decarbonization strategy. However, this approach puts additional pressure on the electrical grid, particularly during winter peak periods, when buildings already represent half of the peak load. Therefore, decarbonizing buildings without significantly increasing peak electricity demand is crucial. Urban district heating and cooling networks of the fourth and fifth generation offer promising pathways by enabling heat sharing, waste heat recovery, integration of renewables, and thermal storage. Heat pumps, known for their high efficiency, play a key role in these systems. However, designing and evaluating these systems requires detailed and dynamic modeling tools that remain simple to use and computationally efficient. This thesis presents a novel heat pump model developed in TRNSYS, capable of simultaneously handling heating and cooling demands through dual temperature setpoints at the evaporator and condenser. The model integrates heat recovery between cooling and heating loads to meet simultaneous demands. When recovery is not sufficient, the system connects to an external thermal source to meet the remaining demand. A new method for modeling heat pump performance is introduced. It is based on a three-dimensional performance map that calculates thermal outputs at the evaporator and condenser according to the outlet temperatures and a new variable: the Compressor Sequence Number (CSN), which reflects compressor operation intensity. This variable enables the multi-mode operation of the heat pump including simultaneous heating and cooling. The model also includes integrated thermal storage management. The objective is to reduce energy consumption, limit electricity peaks, and improve system resilience by prioritizing recovery and limiting reliance on the external source. To demonstrate the performance of the model and assess the potential of heat sharing networks, a case study is conducted on the Namur-Hippodrome neighborhood in Montreal.

The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.
