Abstract
ABSTRACT: This thesis focuses on the development of an experimental platform designed to study vortexinduced vibrations (VIV) of a circular cylinder in transverse flow of water. The main goal is to achieve a low structural damping ratio ζa and mass ratio m∗, thereby maximizing the amplitude of cylinder oscillations and enhancing fluid–structure interaction in the low Reynolds number regime. The centerpiece of the setup is a carbon fiber cylinder mounted in a transparent test section connected to the hydrodynamic loops available at Polytechnique Montréal. A central design innovation lies in enabling a planar bidirectional motion in the XY -plane without relying on pendular suspensions, which tend to generate asymmetric vortex patterns and undesirable energy dissipation. An initial prototype, fabricated through 3D printing in ABS, employed a planar sliding system to constrain the cylinder’s movement. Although this version validated the feasibility of achieving a subcritical mass ratio m∗ = 0.32, it exhibited key mechanical limitations such as insufficient stiffness and warping of the supporting splitter plates. These issues led to excessive damping and compromised dynamic fidelity, necessitating a full redesign. The improved configuration relies on a system of rigid linkages enabling unconstrained movement along two orthogonal axes. A new cylinder was designed and numerically assessed using ABAQUS to verify its structural performance under fluid loading. All components were then modeled in 3D using SolidWorks, allowing for a detailed assembly analysis and accurate computation of the system’s submerged mass properties. The revised setup maintains a theoretical mass ratio of m∗ = 0.32, ensuring conditions favorable to the onset of VIV. Overall, the outcomes validate the design strategy and offer a solid experimental framework for future studies aiming to explore fluid–structure coupling mechanisms in regimes where inertial effects are minimized.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.
