Abstract
«Sous les pavés, la plage» (under the pavement, the beach). This famous slogan from the May 1968 protests sparked the imagination with the image of power, while simultaneously evoking the liberating act of rediscovering a natural dimension beneath the road surface. As is well known, the cobblestones torn from the streets of the Latin Quarter (along with the water from those small excavations) became essential tools in clashes with the police, eventually becoming one of the symbols of those days. The pavés were later replaced by more uniform, and certainly less poetic, asphalt for security reasons.
