Abstract

In many developing countries, most of the vapour compression-based refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump systems continue to run on halogenated refrigerants due to their excellent thermodynamic and thermo-physical properties and also due to their low cost. However, it is well-known that halogenated refrigerants have adverse environmental impacts such as Depletion of the Ozone Layer and Global Warming. Hence, the necessity for finding alternative refrigerants to fulfil the objectives of the international protocols, such as the Montreal protocol. This paper gives an overview and the implementation status on the issue of phasing out of HFCs under the Kigali amendments 2016. The problems pertaining to the usage of environmentally friendly refrigerants are analyzed. The various metrics employed and the properties of the different mixtures are highlighted, and a brief review of the relevant protocols is also provided. This research also contributes to the global sustainability agenda by addressing five Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within the framework of Agenda 2030.
