Les gens de mer forment aux Sables-d'Olonne, port de pêche ancien, un groupe social homogène tout au long de la période étudiée (1747-1866); un groupe qui a su s'adapter à l'évolution des pêches et à la transformation interne de la ville-port. L'approche prosopographique de cette thèse portant sur un corpus de 682 individus permet de suivre les carrières de ces hommes depuis leur entrée dans le métier en tant que mousse jusqu'à leur inscription aux Hors-service. L'histoire de ces hommes au bas de l'échelle sociale amène à mieux cerner les aspects sociaux et économiques du port des Sables sur la longue durée. Chacune des strates sociales est ainsi appréhendée : de la masse des matelots à l'élite des capitaines de navires sans négliger pour autant le monde des négociants et armateurs. Un port qui abandonne après la Révolution française ce qui fit sa renommée à savoir la Grande pêche à Terre-Neuve pour s'enraciner dans une nouvelle activité vers 1830-1860 reposant sur l'exploitation de la sardine. Cette pêche en plein essor va révolutionner la ville qui, dès lors, se métamorphose par l'ouverture de nombreuses usines, le développement d'infrastructures portuaires et l'arrivée massive de migrants venus compléter à la fois les équipages et fournissant aux femmes, un emploi saisonnier rendu possible par le travail du poisson. Cette thèse est une histoire d'hommes, de femmes et d'enfants tous ensemble liés et tournés vers la mer dans un port en profonde mutation.
