Alexandre Alexeïeff et Claire Parker s’associent pour créer, au tout début des années 1930, l’écran d’épingles, un nouveau dispositif cinégraphique (de « gravure animée ») pour le cinéma d’animation. Ce procédé expérimental impose l’invention d’une palette d’outils, la mise en œuvre de pratiques gestuelles spécifiques et coordonnées, des deux côtés de l’écran. La conduite créative est tendue entre un régime de contraintes inhérent au dispositif et une poïétique de l’incertain, caractéristique d’un « vagabondage de la pensée » et impliquée dans une pratique de « création différée », selon Alexeïeff. Cette étude aborde précisément les activités techniques et les expérimentations plastiques, issues de l’appropriation de ce dispositif « boîte noire » et de ses caractéristiques visuelles de « velours d’acier » (Alexeïeff), les formes de rationalité plastiques mises en œuvre, en lien avec des schèmes de référence tels que les hachures de Goyat et le pointillisme de Seurat, les inventions poétiques qui en découlent (de la fluidité spatiale à la modulation du coloris, des matériologies aux météorologies), qui répondent à l’injonction de « voir clair les yeux fermés » (formulée par Pascal Vimenet à ce sujet) et qui invitent à repenser plus largement l’esthétique du film d’animation.
