Abstract
Linguistic difference, in relation to British English and to Metropolitan French respectively, is a major factor – rather neglected until recently – in the definition of Americanness in general, as well as in that of French-Canadian, and Quebec identity in particular. However, as regards someone speaking standard English or French, thus being an "outsider" in this special context, this difference will certainly produce a striking effect on him or her: he/she will have the impression of entering a linguistic universe which he/she will immediately associate with a given territory and a particular usage. The presence of Americanisms (in a broad sense, including any deviation from European usage, thus Canadianisms as well) will be interpreted first of all as a clear sign of someone or something belonging to the American continent, which, in turn, implies a conscious attitude on the part of an author, his intention to mark his specificity as a writer, and to distinguish himself from authors with backgrounds and experiences different from his own.
