Abstract
In this article, Guy Archambault examines the evolution of Hungary in the light of his experience as a diplomat in this country during the crucial period of post-communism. He discusses Canada's support for Hungary at that time and the recent deterioration in relations between the two countries. He wonders about the transformation of Hungary, considered by the West as the "star pupil" of the transition to democracy and the market economy in the 1990s, and how it has become a champion of illiberalism and a detractor of Western values. He finds the sources of this metamorphosis in the dysfunctions of the economic transition, the persistence of the nationalist and conservative tradition and the difficulties of adapting to societal changes that have become the norm in Western countries. Finally, the author notes unexpected parallels between Canadian-Quebec and Hungarian national issues.
