Abstract
This article examines some diplomatic aspects of the Cold War: how two countries belonging to antagonistic blocks succeeded in establishing diplomatic relations. After the Second World War both countries make an effort for the development of relations, but the international political atmosphere is not favourable. In the sixties the political (détente), economic (market of the Canadian grain) and humanitarian (Hungarian immigrants in Canada) interests led Canada and Hungary to establish diplomatic relations in 1964. This article is based on the documents of the Archives of the Hungarian Communist Party and the Foreign Office of Hungary.
