Abstract
ABSTRACT Samples of the backfill sand from a sloped reinforced soil wall were tested in three laboratory test devices: a direct shearbox, a triaxial apparatus, and a plane strain device. Laboratory data selected for the stress-range of interest are used to establish an angle of shearing resistance appropriate to strain mobilization in the structure. The findings suggest that plane strain conditions likely prevail in the reinforced soil structure. Discussion addresses the selection of the peak friction angle in design of reinforced soil retaining structures.
