Bibliographic record
Abstract
ABSTRACT: « ABSTRACT : Alkaline drainage (AlkD), characterized by a high pH and alkalinity, represents an environmental issue of interest emerging in certain industries such as aluminum and iron-titanium. AlkD may also be characterized by sulphate and metal contaminant concentrations that may exceed current environmental standards. AlkD occurs in areas where tailings containing high proportions of alkali minerals are exposed to precipitation. These minerals include Ca and Mg silicates (rankinite - Ca3Si2O7; larnite - Ca2SiO4; akermanite - Ca2MgSiO7), aluminosilicates (Albite - NaAlSi3O8; Anorthite – CaAl2Si2O8; orthoclase – KAlSi3O8), carbonates (calcite - CaCO3 and dolomite MgCa(CO3)2) and major oxides (FeO, MgO, MnO, CaO). Surface and groundwater can be impacted by leachate from these tailings if adequate control measures are not deployed. This poses a major problem, especially when the receiving waters feed a drinking water source or are associated with fragile ecosystems. However, unlike acid mine drainage (AMD), which is widely documented, AD is still poorly studied, although it can have significant impacts on receiving environments. In this context, the present study aims to evaluate the geochemical behaviour of AlkD-generating Fe-Ti slags. The main scientific objectives of this thesis are as follows: (1) to evaluate the physicochemical characteristics and mineralogy of Fe-Ti slag collected at the storage site of the Rio Tinto Fer et Titane (RTFT) metallurgical plant in Sorel-Tracy; (2) assess the mobility of contaminants present in these slags; and (3) compare their geochemical behavior and evaluate their potential for DA generation. Six samples of Fe-Ti slag (PH1, PH2, PH3, Pkiln, Oxides UGS and UAE) were sampled at Rio Tinto Iron & Titane's Sorel-Tracy Smelter (Quebec). A physicochemical (particle size, relative density, specific surface area, pulp pH, total sulphur/carbon) and mineralogical characterization by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning energy dispersive electron microscopy (SEM-EDS) of these residues was performed. Single leaching (toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) and synthetic precipitation leaching procedure (SPLP), multiple leaching tests (sequential extraction procedure - PES) and kinetic tests (column and wet cell) were performed to assess the mobility of contaminants in the short and long term. Once the kinetic column testing was completed, the columns were dismantled, and slag samples were collected and recharacterized. Sequential extractions were performed to assess changes in the mobile fractions of metals. A depletion kinetics (mobilization of elements) of the elements Ca, Mg, Mn, Si, Ni and Cr were then performed to assess the extent of their release during the rinsing cycles, and to compare their behavior.»

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
