Pablo Palazuelo: The Line as a Dream of Architecture

Abstract
This publication is the catalogue for the exhibition of the same name, which presents for the first time the career of this Spanish painter, sculptor, and engraver, the leading figure of 20th-century geometric abstraction, through a selection of works and projects that illustrate the intense relationship between architecture and his artistic production. It is structured into nine sections, ranging from the artist's formative years and early influences to his furniture designs for the home and large-scale works conceived for urban spaces, as well as pieces that emphasize references to labyrinths, passageways, enclosures, boundaries, and stained glass. In total, 12 works and 12 projects are on display, including drawings, sketches, watercolors, models, and sculptures, all from the collection of the Pablo Palazuelo Foundation. Many of these have remained unpublished until their cataloging by the curators and are being shown to the public for the first time. The exhibition is curated by Teresa Raventós-Viñas and Gonzalo Sotelo-Calvillo, the latter being the author of a doctoral thesis, "Analysis of the Geometry of Pablo Palazuelo from the Architect's Perspective," which, defended at the Polytechnic University of Madrid in 2015, serves as the basis for the exhibition. In Sotelo's words, Palazuelo's creative method "bears a striking resemblance to the methodology of architectural design, progressing through a series of graphic stages that led him gradually from initial sketches to more defined plans for materialization." This particular method led him, for example, to use sketch paper, whose transparency allowed him to superimpose different sketches while developing his works—a system he learned during his initial architectural training at the City of Oxford School of Arts and Crafts, where he studied between 1933 and 1936.
