Abstract

A deep-water sea star (Pteraster sp.) was observed to brood offspring following a dual strategy, with a portion of the clutch being released as embryos (gastrulae) and the other as crawling juveniles. All offspring stages were released simultaneously during one event in late fall. This contribution is the first to document a breeding event and live offspring release in a deep-sea member of the family Pterasteridae, representing one of the rare reports of this kind for deep-sea Asteroidea in general.
