Abstract
L ’Histoire documentaire de la Congrégation des Missionnaires Oblats de Marie-Immaculée dans l’Est du Canada du père Gaston Carrière, o.m.i. (1913-1985), qui couvre en douze tomes huit décennies de missions reflète une représentation du genre. Cet article s’intéresse à la vision de Carrière qui se manifeste dans les différentes circonstances du déploiement de cette congrégation missionnaire en Amérique du Nord. L’auteur développe une image de « surhomme » alimentée par les perspectives catholiques et bourgeoises. En étudiant le vocabulaire et les figures de style employées par Carrière, cet article veut jeter un éclairage nouveau sur les différentes images du missionnaire qui sont développées et qui forgent un archétype qui n’est pas sans conséquences sur la construction d’une masculinité cléricale et des expressions de la virilité.
