Weight, Fineness, and Debasement in Visigothic Tremisses from Theudis to Leovigild: New Evidence from the Hoards of Seville and Reccopolis
Bibliographic record
Abstract
Prior research has indicated a significant reduction in weight for pre-regal Visigothic tremisses around the 570s, toward the end of the series. Limited studies have suggested a similar reduction in fineness around that time. This article presents measurements of specific gravity for two hoards of pre-regal tremisses from Spain, that of Calle Cuna in Seville, dated to the years around 550, and that of Zorita de los Canes, site of the Visigothic city of Reccopolis, dated to around 578. This additional metrological evidence shows a more complex sequence of changes in standard, with significant debasement happening during the third quarter of the sixth century, followed by a series of reforms under Leovigild between 572 and 586.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one teacher head, not a consensus.
