Abstract
The purpose of this work is to conduct a comprehensive source-based study of photographs of oneyear volunteers of the Austro-Hungarian Army preserved in the collections of the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Museum of Local History. The authors aim to highlight the specific nature of the phenomenon of one-year voluntary military service in the army of the Habsburg Monarchy and to characterize the historical conditions under which these photographs were taken. The article analyzes a number of photographs from the period of the First World War preserved in the collections of the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Museum of Local History and presents the historical context of these images. The photographs are united by the fact that they depict one-year volunteers. The authors examine the distinctive features of this phenomenon in the Austro-Hungarian Army – oneyear military service. The study outlines the requirements for candidates, their training process, and their subsequent service both in peacetime and during the First World War. The sequence and changes in the conferral of ranks upon these servicemen are considered. The transformation of insignia worn by the one-year volunteers on their uniforms is analyzed. The role of these volunteers is characterized in the context of the shortage of officer personnel in the Austro-Hungarian armed forces during the Great War. The article separately examines each of the four photographs depicting one-year volunteers. The uniform and insignia of the photographed soldiers are analyzed in detail. In particular, the authors point out uniform elements that confirm that the individuals in the photos were one-year volunteers of the Imperial Army. Where it was possible to identify the specific military unit in which they served, brief information about the formation is provided. The article also briefly outlines the life paths of those soldiers whose identities were established. In general, one-year volunteers played a significant role in shaping the officer corps of the Imperial Army. The analyzed photographs constitute an important source for studying the issue of one-year military service in the Austro-Hungarian armed forces. Moreover, these images shed light on the participation of Ukrainians in the hostilities of the First World War within the ranks of the AustroHungarian Army.
