Abstract
Région administrative et économique, le Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean existe aussi comme espace culturel, produit d’une référence élaborée au long cours dans les représentations collectives. Peu étudiée, cette référence n’en forme pas moins un puissant adjuvant au discours sur le développement régional depuis plus d’un siècle. Cet article propose une incursion dans les processus de construction du régionalisme saguenéen, depuis ses premières apparitions au xix e siècle jusqu’à sa formalisation vers le milieu du xx e siècle. Il s’agit d’étudier la manière dont s’affirme le « territoire construit » du Saguenay à travers l’évolution d’un discours interprétatif sur la région émis par ses élites tant intellectuelles et culturelles qu’économiques et politiques. Ses modulations sont étudiées par le biais d’une série de thématiques structurantes dans la presse régionale, soit la spatialité et le territoire perçu (régionalisme géographique), les conceptions du développement (régionalisme économique), l’ altérité (régionalisme populationnel) et la temporalité (régionalisme historiographique).
