Abstract
Cet article s’intéresse à l’évolution de la problématisation et du traitement de l’indifférence religieuse au Québec à l’aune du développement de la sociologie religieuse et de la sécularisation de son objet de recherche. J’avance l’hypothèse selon laquelle le développement de la problématique de l’indifférence aurait connu deux phases : d’une part, une phase interne , durant laquelle l’indifférence était essentiellement traitée comme un « problème » né et perpétué dans et par un catholicisme « de masse » ; d’autre part, une phase externe , venue de pair avec l’émergence d’une nouvelle génération de sociologues ayant favorisé l’introduction de perspectives séculières dans l’étude du religieux. De la sociologie pastorale à l’étude du catholicisme culturel en passant par le développement de la religiologie, les transformations du cadrage sociologique de la question de l’indifférence religieuse et de la figure de l’indifférent constituent l’héritage d’une sociologie de la « non-religion » qui, en contexte québécois, reste encore à faire.
