Abstract
Cet article s’intéresse à la propagande déployée pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale au Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, au Québec. Il est consacré à une importante campagne de propagande régionale mise sur pied par Alcan après la grève de ses travailleurs de l’aluminium en juillet 1941 à Arvida. L’entreprise a créé un personnage nommé Jos Alco, dont le rôle consistait à s’adresser aux travailleurs dans le but de pacifier les tensions ouvrières et de maintenir la production de guerre. Le personnage ouvrier a été au coeur d’une quarantaine de dialogues dans deux journaux régionaux. Il a aussi été la vedette de plus de 130 émissions à la radio régionale de Radio-Canada. Alcan souhaitait ainsi éviter qu’une nouvelle grève ne paralyse ses opérations alors que la région était le centre névralgique de l’industrie de guerre la plus importante au Canada. Il s’agit d’une première étude montrant qu’une propagande de guerre adaptée à des enjeux régionaux a été déployée dans une région au Québec pendant le conflit.
