Abstract
le suicide est devenu le baromètre de l ’état de santé mentale des communautés amérindiennes. Au Québec un taux de suicide 3 à 4 fois supérieur à la moyenne. A Kahnawake, une communauté à 15 km du centre ville de Montréal, le suicide est un souci permanent, mais Son triste décompte est dans la moyenne canadienne. Au travers de mon expérience professionnelle, nous allons apprendre à mieux connaître cette communauté de 8000 habitants, qui, en se développant, réhabilite sa langue et sa culture mohawk. Dix ans de pratique professionnelle à Kahnawake m’ont convaincu que cette identité collective restaurée et valorisée n’a cessé de protéger mes patients. Une perception subjective confirmée par de nombreux épidémiologiques qui considèrent l’amérindianité comme un important facteur de résilience. Dans notre travail thérapeutique, nous allons sans cesse rencontrer ce double identitaire : il est, à la fois, cet Autre ouvert, partie prenante de la modernité, dont les valeurs universelles parcourent la planète. Et en même temps inscrit dans l’histoire, ce même Autre insaisissable, souvent dernier refuge identitaire que nous devons respecter.
