In single-phase bridge inverters, low DC voltage utilization results in high total harmonic distortion (THD) in AC current when filtering parameters are held constant. This high THD forces conventional L-filter designs to use higher inductance to meet standards, which in turn increases system volume and cost. This paper presents a modified series active power filter (APF) that mitigates current distortion without increasing inductance. Compared to the previous series APF, the modified topology borrows the idea of cascaded H-bridge structure, eliminating the need for an extra AC source. This paper discusses the operating principle of the modified series APF, highlighting its difference from conventional cascaded H-bridge modulation techniques. Simulation results show that the proposed APF reduces the required inductance by over 50%— from 3mH to 1.4mH—while maintaining comparable current THD performance.
