Рассматривается место российской колонизации Аляски и Калифорнии в рамках типологии колониализма в Новом Свете, где можно выделить пять типов колониального развития, ареалы которых не совпадают с национально-государственными границами колониальных империй: испаноамериканский «горный», испаноамериканский миссионный, плантационно-рабовладельческий, тип «белого замещения», субарктический торговый. В Русской Америке представлено два из них: «островная» модель имеет аналогом испанское репартимьенто, на материковой Аляске представлен субарктический тип, аналогичный канадскому. Несмотря на генетическую связь колонизации Сибири и Русской Америки, распространение на восток сибирской модели колониализма натолкнулось на экологический и социокультурный барьеры. В Русской Калифорнии (колония Росс, Форт-Росс) формировался особый вариант островной модели, где основанием социальной пирамиды были местные индейцы.
