Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

This paper deals with Croatian-English bilingualism and is organised into two main sections. The first section is the theoretical background to the second part, a research which was conducted for the purpose of this paper. The first chapter deals with different definitions of bilingualism. The second chapter concentrates on bilingualism and biculturalism, as well as on identity of bilingual and bicultural people. In the third chapter different types of bilingualism are presented. The fourth chapter explains the new phenomenon called heritage language and heritage speakers, as well as its connection with Croatian-English bilinguals. The fifth chapter offers an overview of the history of Croatian migrations in English-speaking countries. As far as the practical section is concerned, the aim is to analyse the language use of families of Croatian background who live in one of the English-speaking countries (Australia, Canada and the United States) both from the sociolinguistic and linguistic point of view. Therefore, the aim of the research and the methodology are presented at the beginning of the second section. The data and translations are analysed in two next chapters. Furthermore, the possible predictions for the Croatian community and its identity are presented in the eight chapter.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
