Recent developments in studies of the mechanics of progressive breakdown of structure in geophysical materials under compression are discussed. Ice has been used as a reference material in experimental studies. The breakdown occurs under high stresses comprising both hydrostatic pressure and shear in zones that form as a result of fracture processes without geostatic pressure. The change in structure includes extensive microcracking and recrystallization at lower confining pressure and recrystallization together with other softening processes at higher confining pressures. The latter include pressure melting in the case of ice. The softening process at higher confining pressures leads to a cyclic failure process at certain loading rates. The m1crofracturing and recrystallization at lower pressures are similar to cataclasis, while the recrystallization at high pressures is similar to mylonlle formation in geology. Computer analysis of the process of interaction with mdenters has been conducted using the methods of damage mechanics, with positive results.
