Bir şehrin tarihinde o şehirde bulunan manastır ve tekke gibi yapıların önemli bir yeri vardır. XI. yüzyıl İstanbul’unda sadece sur içi bölgesinde üç yüz civarında manastır bulunmaktaydı. İstanbul’da Bizans dönemindeki mistik arayış ve yaşayış geleneği Osmanlı döneminde de devam etti. Manastırlar ve tekkeler aynı zamanda tarih yazılan mekânlardı. Bizans prensesi Anna Comnena, babası Alexius Comnenus’un hayatını anlatan Alexiad adlı eseri bir manastırda yazmıştı. Manastırda yazılan bu eser, Anadolu Selçuklu tarihinin ilk dönemleri hakkında önemli bilgiler ihtiva etmektedir
