I 1941 indledtes den tredje store udgravningskampagne i Jelling siden opdagelsen af et gravkammer i højen nord for Jelling Kirke i 1820. Udgravningens første mål var højen syd for kirken, hvor håbet var at finde et nyt gravkammer. Øverst på højen stødte udgraverne uventet på rester af kraftige stolper af egetræ. Senere dendrokronologisk datering har vist, at konstruktionen var opført omkring midten af 1100-tallet og derfor snarest har tilknytning til stenkirken i Jelling. Lignende konstruktioner på gamle høje tæt ved romanske kirker tyder på, at der er tale om et klokketårn eller stativ til kirkens klokke. Det gik formentlig af brug i middelalderen, måske i 1400-tallet, da det nuværende kirketårn af sten blev opført.
