Abstract
The genus Staphylococcus is present in nasal flora and causes opportunistic infections in humans and various animals. The main pathogenic staphylococcus is Staphylococcus aureus. Other coagulase-positive staphylococci are primarily of relevance for dogs and cats, namely Staphylococcus intermedius, Staphylococcus schleiferi subsp. coagulans, and Staphylococcus pseudintermedius. These species are commensal organisms, but are also a cause of disease (such as pyoderma and atitis externa) in both dogs and cats. The recently identified Staphylococcus pseudintermedius is occasionally isolated from serious human infections, and the emergence and spread of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius straisn are major veterinary and public health issues. This study was designed to understand the prevalence of coagulase- positive staphylococci in the nasal cavity of dogs and cats and the role of companion animals as reservoirs of pathogenic and antimicrobial-resistant staphylococci. The aim of the present study was to isolate and identify coagulase-positive staphylococci from companion animals' nasal cavities. Swabs were collected from different age (5 months - 13 years) of 24 dogs and 19 cats nasal cavities. The nasal cavity microflora of Yorkshire terriers, Labrador, French Bulldog, West Scottish terrirs, Pekinese, Siberian Huskies, German shepherds, Boxer, Shar-Pei, dachshund and mixed breed dogs; Sphinx, Siamese, British shorthair and mixed breed cats were examined.
